Buying A Domain Name For Business? He Who Hesitates Is Lost

The last phrase in the title above is known to be a misquote of a line from Joseph Addison's 1712 tragedy about the famous Roman statesman of the same name, "Cato"; but it could just as easily be a corollary of Murphy's famous law: "What can go wrong, will go wrong!"

If you think you've found the perfect domain name for your business and it hasn't been registered yet, don't hesitate--buy It! If you're old enough to have a credit card you should know by now that the moment you find something you want, somebody else is going to come along and get it if you hesitate. It might not be logical to assume that a domain name that has been waiting in the weeds all these years for you to come along and find it will suddenly have several suitors, but logic isn't all that it's cracked up to be; sometime you gotta go with your heart.

This law still applies today even in a product as oversold as real estate. Realtors try to convince buyers to buy if they think they've found the house of their dreams and buyers still hesitate believing that the house has been on the market for six months, so what's the hurry?...and lose the house. Ask any Realtor; it happens all the time.

These days there are a whole lot fewer people buying real estate than domain names, particularly dot-coms. Eighty million plus dot-com names have been sold and every day there are thousands--possibly millions--of people searching through the available databases hoping to snag a certain dot-com before somebody else does. If you want to take the chance that one of those people won't stumble over the one you want, go ahead, but don't be surprised if you find yourself searching for another one sooner than you expected.
